TUD water line project begins Sunday

A three-month project to replace a water pipeline in downtown Sonora begins at 8 p.m. Sunday.

Tuolumne Utilities District is funding the $800,000 project to replace 3,000 feet of a nearly century-old, 6-inch cast iron pipe with a new, 10-inch PVC pipe, on South Washington Street between Church Street and Hospital Road.

Estimated completion date is Nov. 14.

Drivers on South Washington Street may experience delays or detours from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday nights through Friday mornings, while crews work on the project.

According to TUD, the cast iron pipe on South Washington Street that conveys water to district customers in the downtown Sonora area is about 75 to 100 years old and in dire need of an upgrade.

The replacement should cut down on the number of water line breaks in the downtown Sonora area, according to TUD.

The district will also be installing new fire hydrants and upgrading individual water service laterals where needed.

Sonora contractor Njirich and Sons Inc. was hired by TUD to do all of the work on the project.

District General Manager Tom Scesa said a contractor was hired because TUD crews are working on other projects and must immediately respond to fix any reported leaks.

The district plans to notify customers prior to any scheduled service outages while the Washington Street project is being completed.

Drivers are asked to use caution in the area and follow any detours while crews are working.
