Several boards lack candidates in November

More than a dozen government boards - overseeing agencies ranging from fire districts to school districts - are still seeking candidates for November's election in Tuolumne County.

According to the county Elections Office, races for 13 boards have at least one incumbent not seeking re-election, giving potential candidates through Wednesday to finish the necessary paperwork to run. The filing deadline for candidates passed on Friday for the Nov. 4 election, though races without incumbents are granted a three-day extension.

Tuolumne Utilities District is among those with extra time, as incumbents Michael Sarno and Ruanne Mikkelsen are not running. So far, incumbent Delbert Rotelli, Patrick Congdon, David Harris, Jim Grinnell, Ron Ringen, Jerry Morrow and David Evans all have turned in paperwork to run for the available seats.

The Tuolumne County Board of Education Area 7 seat plus seats on the Belleview, Big-Oak Flat/Groveland, Curtis Creek, Summerville, Twain Harte/Long Barn and Sonora Union High School boards are open to candidates through Wednesday.

The Jamestown, Strawberry and Tuolumne fire districts are also seeking candidates, as are Jamestown and Tuolumne sanitary districts, according to the Elections Office. Potential candidates for the Don Pedro Community Services District also have until the end of business hours Wednesday.

Boards with as many or more open seats than candidates will not appear on the November ballot. Any seats that remain open can be filled via appointment by a district's board, by appointment by the county Board of Supervisors, or by special election.

To file papers for office, visit the Tuolumne County Clerk/Auditor-Controller at 2 S. Green St., Sonora, or call 533-5570.
