Mono Way closure ends early

The roadwork-related closure of a short stretch of Mono Way between Roselyn Lane and Rogers Road will end today, according to the City of Sonora.

The closure, initially scheduled to last through the week, is scheduled to be lifted at 8 a.m., City Engineer Gerard Fuccillo announced Tuesday. The closure has been in place 24-hours a day, seven days a week since July 28.

Road crews had to close the street to install a culvert that allows drainage under the road. Drivers were re-routed along the parallel Sanguinetti Road, causing lengthy traffic backups in the busy area.

Road construction will continue along Mono Way, with traffic control and temporary lane closures still likely during the work. But the culvert replacement will likely be the biggest disruption for traffic during the widening project.

The complete closure isrequired because the replacement calls for digging a significant trench across the entire road, which can't be done incrementally.

When completed, the $3.7 million project funded by Tuolumne County and the City of Sonora will broaden Mono Way from Greenley Road to Fir Drive.
