Drought, budget on council agenda

PUBLIC MEETING: Angels Camp City Council, 6 p.m. Tuesday, Angels Fire House, 1404 Vallecito Road, Angels Camp

The Angels Camp City Council will vote Tuesday night on new drought restrictions required by the state.

The State Water Resources Control Board is directing city residents to limit outdoor watering to no more than two days per week.

The council previously requested a voluntary 20 percent reduction of water usage. However, the new restrictions are mandatory as the state's historic drought persists.

City Engineer Dave Myers said the city's had a 14 percent reduction in water use since March.

"We're doing pretty good," he said.

The City of Angels Camp supplies water from the Utica Water and Power Authority ditch system to its residents.

Prior to Tuesday's regular meeting, the council will hold a 4:30 p.m. workshop regarding the city's proposed 2014-15 budget. If not completed by 6 p.m., the budget workshop will continue to the council's regular meeting.

"As the city continues to manage through a protracted economic downturn, we continue to see positive signs in the local economy in slow but steady improvements from the previous fiscal years," stated an executive summary from City Administrator Michael McHatten.

Those "positive signs" include increases in sales tax, transient-occupancy tax and property tax revenues.

Among the fiscal year's $1.7 million in capital projects is the completion of the Highway 49 sidewalk project as well as water and sewer rate studies.
