Dollar store has big plans in Tuolumne

A new Dollar General store is set to open in the coming months in Jamestown, and the Tennessee-based retailer is already eyeing two more locations in Tuolumne County.

Work is nearing completion on an approximately 7,200-square-foot store on Highway 108 in Jamestown and, according to Dollar General corporate headquarters, the company is targeting late September for its grand opening.

The discount retailer is expected to employ between six and 10 people, depending on the store's needs, company spokeswoman Jaclyn Dees said.

The new location is part of an aggressive expansion of Dollar General, which has opened 168 stores in California alone since 2012. The chain retailer, which sells food, housewares, beauty products and other items at discounts, has 11,000 stores in the U.S. with plans for opening 700 across the country this year, Dees said.

In Tuolumne County, the company has submitted a site development application permit for a proposed store in Soulsbyville, at Highway 108 and Soulsbyville Road, according to the county Community Resources Agency.

"We're reviewing it right now, and it will go to the (county) Planning Commission," agency deputy director Mike Laird said.

Laird also confirmed talks between the county and Dollar General for a third store in Columbia, near Howser Lane and Parrotts Ferry Road. No applications or plans have been submitted yet.

Dees said the company often uses a third party to scout possible store locations. They tend to prefer locations within a few miles, or a 10-minute drive, of their stores' customers. The company also looks at traffic patterns and other criteria.

The company also focuses on rural markets.
