El Portal Fire moving north into Yosemite

Austen Thibault, The Union Democrat

The El Portal Fire is burning north and northeast into Yosemite National Park, but away from settlements, according to the incident management team midday Monday.

The team is setting up a command center at the Badger Pass ski resort for the El Portal and Dark Hole fires, both still burning in Yosemite National Park.

The 2,600-acre El Portal fire "has been fast-moving" as of yesterday but no new numbers have been given for acreage or containment since this morning. The fire remains at 2,632 acres and 5 percent containment.

A Type 1, top-ranked California incident management team took over the incident Sunday evening and is now setting up a command center at Badger Pass Ski Area.

Evacuation orders remain in effect for Foresta and Old El Portal, but an evacuation center was closed today due to lack of use, according to Yvonne Jones, incident management team spokeswoman.

"Our main goal is to protect the communities of El Portal and Foresta," Jones said.

One home has been confirmed to be burnt. Others remain threatened.

Over 700 personnel have been called to the fire. Over 900 will be on the incident by Tuesday morning, according to Jones.
