Hotter temps, lightning forecast

Triple-digit temperatures will park over the Tuolumne and Calaveras county foothills this weekend, while warm moist air in the high country could bring balmy conditions and more lightning, according to the National Weather Service.

The latest forecast from the National Weather Service calls for mostly sunny skies and temperatures ranging from 97 to 101 in the lower-elevation communities like Sonora, Angels Camp and Copperopolis today, with those same locations expected to see highs between 99 and 103 Saturday and between 96 and 99 Sunday.

Weekend forecasts callfor high temperatures to reach into the upper 80s and low 90s in some higher-elevation communities like Groveland, Twain Harte and Arnold.

The warming trend is coming from a high-pressure system building in the Southwestern United States, which will influence the weather in Central California.

"We're going to push to slightly above-normal temperatures for (Friday) into the weekend," said National Weather Service Meteorologist Drew Peterson.

"But this is one of the warmest times of the year," Peterson added, saying it's "not out of the ordinary" to see these temperatures in late July.
