A 30-year-old Southern California man drowned Tuesday at a popular Groveland-area swimming hole.

Enkhchuluun Demberel, of Torrance, Los Angeles County, was swimming about noon at Rainbow Pool, a day-use area on the Stanislaus National Forest's Groveland Ranger District.

"Basically, he had limited swimming ability," said Tuolumne County Sheriff's Sgt. Scott Johnson. "He went in water over his head and started to struggle."

Demberel was pulled from the water, but couldn't be resuscitated.

An off-duty doctor who happened to be at Rainbow Pool even performed CPR on him, Johnson said.

Medical personnel pronounced Demberel dead at the scene.

Johnson said Demberel had spent Monday night in Groveland and was on his way with family and friends to Yosemite National Park.

"On the way they decided to go for a swim and that's when the tragedy unfolded," he said.

Rainbow Pool, a short detour off Highway 120 about 13 miles east of Groveland, is a well-known swimming hole and picnic area. It reopened this spring after being closed as a result of last year's massive Rim Fire.
