‘Innovation’ coming to old hospital

Chris Caskey, The Union Democrat

A new idea to build a tech-business community in Tuolumne County will officially kick off on Aug. 5, organizers say.

According to the Tuolumne County Economic Development Authority, the doors to what is being called the InnovationLab will open after a ceremony, with tours available for the public the same day.

Spearheaded by the economic development authority, the lab is modeled after a new phenomenon known as a "hacker lab" and will offer equipment, office space, computers and other tools for developers, entrepreneurs and other tech-based people.

The grand opening and an open house are scheduled for 12:15 p.m. on the third floor of the old Tuolumne General Hospital building, at 101 Hospital Road in Sonora. Visitors will be able to sign up for memberships.

The InnovationLab will give local businesspeople access to equipment like 3D printers and development software, as well as special computers for software development, electronics lab and a metal work and wood shop. But it is also meant to be a kind of communal space where like-minded go-getters share and build on each others' ideas in hopes of establishing a tech-savvy business community.

According to TCEDA, this is the first of such spaces in a California rural community.
