TUD lost revenue in June

Tuolumne Utilities District saw a decrease of about $200,000 in June's operating revenues because of a roughly 50 percent drop in water usage.

The district's Finance Committee, which consists of TUD board members Mike Sarno and Delbert Rotelli, met with Finance Director Steve Sheffield on Tuesday to go over the financial statements for the past year.

Sheffield told the committee that revenue was down about $200,000 last month over June 2013 as a result of the district's current 50 percent water-use reduction goal set by the board on Jan. 28 in response to the drought.

Fortunately, the statements showed that there would be about $178,000 left over from the $12.4 million in revenue that was budgeted for operations, maintenance and labor expenses from July 1, 2013, to June 30 of this year.

However, Sheffield said that he expected the revenue from service charges to continue declining over the next couple months.

Sarno asked about whether the district would be easing up on some of the water-use restrictions now that the state has approved Pacific Gas and Electric Co.'s request to draw about 600 acre-feet of water from Pinecrest Reservoir as needed before Labor Day.

TUD General Manager Tom Scesa said he's reviewing the letter of approval and plans to make a recommendation at the board's next meeting on July 22.

The district's goal since January has been to cut water usage by 50 percent districtwide to ensure that an adequate supply would be available throughout the summer.
