Brown pays Sonora a visit

Union Democrat staff

Gov. Jerry Brown made a stop in Sonora on Thursday, accompanied by an entourage of security agents, his wife and his dog.

Sporting a yellow baseball cap, slacks, a button-up shirt and tennis shoes, Brown bobbed down Washington Street about 5 p.m. unnoticed by many, while men in dark suits staked out the intersections.

After passing the Odd Fellows Hall and Courthouse Square, he stopped into the Sportsman, a Washington Street gun shop that also serves beer and hot dogs.

Wife Anne Brown and dog Sutter mostly hung back with the security detail in the governor's black SUV.

Bellying up to the bar, Brown chatted with Milt Allen, the Sportsman's former owner.

Brown asked if the establishment served whiskey (it has a license for beer and wine - no liquor). Employee Steve Kane joked that Brown might have to loosen some state laws to allow it.
