Sonora teen recovering from dive injury

A Sonora High School teenager is recovering from a broken neck he suffered after diving from the shore into New Melones Reservoir.

Nicholas "Nick" Harris, 17, of Sonora, is being treated at Northern California Shriners Hospital for Children in Sacramento.

Two weeks have passed, and the extent of his injury is unknown because he is in spinal shock. He still has no feeling or movement from the waist down.

Thursday night, doctors said they are not yet calling it paralysis, but a spinal injury.

"I am doing good - I'm okay," he said.

Desiree Tidball, of Sonora, is Harris' mother. She said on Wednesday her son could brush his teeth and feed himself again. He is also able to sit in a wheelchair with aid.

Progress was expected to be slow, and Harris has continued to keep a positive attitude through all of this. Tidwell said the only time she's seen him cry so far was when he said, "I have so many people who care."
