Annual Mother Lode Fair is coming to town

Austen Thibault, The Union Democrat

This weekend's 77th annual Mother Lode Fair will offer traditional fair favorites along with a couple new experiences.

The fair's theme is "Red, White and You: A Salute to Our Veterans," and kicks off with free entrance on Thursday to any veterans with military identification. A discount price is also offered to other adults Thursday, with the request that fair-goers also bring a can of food for charity.

The fair runs Thursday through Sunday.

Today is the last day to get advance tickets for $7.50 and unlimited-ride wristbands for $15 at the fair office or at either Save Mart in Sonora.

Entry tickets - whether advance or at the door - will provide access to most of the attractions the fair has to offer, including grandstand events and live music performances.

Grandstand events include motocross on Friday, truck and tractor pulls on Saturday, and a demolition derby on Sunday. The fair administration won't host a Thursday grandstand event, hoping for more participants in the weekend events and a calmer night on Thursday for families.

Thursday's main stage audience will hear Doobie Rock, a Doobie Brothers tribute band. Friday will feature alternative rock band Flying Blind. Country fans can join Tom Drinnon Band on Saturday. Sunday will feature two Mother Lode bands - traditional rock and roll by Uplands Drive in the early evening and soul and rock by Chains Required at night.

Fair-goers might want to splurge on some of the extras inside.

A fair first this year is a zip line over 100 feet long and 25 feet tall, visible from the main gates. Zip line rides cost extra.
