Fire closes 49 in Calaveras

Highway 49 south of San Andreas is closed because of a fire.

The highway is closed from Buckskin Way to the old Airport outside of San Andreas, according to Cal Fire spokeswoman Lisa Williams. Alternate routes between Angels Camp and San Andreas are Fricot City road to Calaveritas to Mountain Ranch Road, according to California Highway Patrol.

The 20-25 acre vegetation fire broke out at 3:27 p.m. this afternoon on George Reed Road Road.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and it is unknown when the highway will be re-opened, Williams said.

Employees at the Resource Connection Food Bank said they can see smoke behind a tree line that separates the food bank from a concrete mixing plant.
