Sonora council winners named

Chris Caskey, The Union Democrat

The final count from the June 3 primary election shows Sonora City Council candidates George Segarini and Jim Garaventa as the top two finishers.

The still-unofficial results released Friday by the Tuolumne County Elections Office showed Segarini and Garaventa received 362 and 359 votes, respectively. Those numbers - which include all absentee, provisional and in-person ballots - put them ahead of incumbent Councilman Matt Hawkins (351) and challenger Mark Ferreira (346) in the race for two council seats.

The county Elections Office still needs to complete a certification process that includes a hand count from 1 percent of the 73 precincts chosen at random out of a hat, though that process should not change who won. The Elections Office has 28 days to send the certified results to Secretary of State.

Both Hawkins and Ferreira on Sunday said they don't plan to push for a recount. A candidate or community member can force a recount within 10 days of the results.

"If it were within a vote or two, I probably would," said Hawkins, a one-term member of the City Council and general manager at Carl's Jr.in Sonora.

"I'm at peace with everything. I'm very happy," he said.
