Sonora council race dangles

Chris Caskey, The Union Democrat

With the Sonora City Council election still undecided, the Tuolumne County Elections Office is expected to release a final count sometime today.

Registrar of voters Deborah Bautista said Thursday evening that her office was verifying the last of about 200 uncounted provisional ballots. Bautista said her employees expect a final count by the end of today.

While they represent a relatively small number, those provisional ballots take significantly longer to process than the ones cast by mail or at the polls. They have to be verified by hand, with elections workers cross-checking to make sure the voter is eligible and did not vote at another polling place.

Provisional ballots are distributed by the elections office and at polling places on election day in cases where there's been a mistake or error involving a ballot, polling place or address.

"People just don't realize how many extra steps it takes," Bautista said.
