Cal Unified faces $2.4M shortfall

Austen Thibault, The Union Democrat

Calaveras Unified School District must cut $2.4 million from its budget over the next two years to stay afloat.

Calaveras County's largest school district has struggled with shrinking enrollment for several years, decreasing its state funding.

This year, it realized too late that some expected money was actually not coming from the state's new school funding formula as the district believed. That includes funds for new teachers to lower the student-teacher ratio.

The district had hired nine new teachers before finding out the funding will be awarded over time, not all at once.

On Monday, the board rescinded eight of the teaching position hires. The district has about 160 teachers.

Next on the list is likely consolidating the district's several small schools into one.

Then the district will have to look at laying off teachers, said Superintendent Mark Campbell.

Because of the budget mishap, the Calaveras County Office of Education will attend future board meetings and give advice.
