Sonora El. arsonist gets six years

Austen Thibault, The Union Democrat /

The teenager who pleaded guilty to starting the November Sonora Elementary School fire was sentenced this week to six years in prison, to be served in a juvenile facility.

Judge Donald Segerstrom on Monday ordered Shahaun Lemont Davis to a juvenile facility with the midterm sentence of six years, for arson and an enhancement for causing over $1 million dollars in damage.

Davis, 17, will have to register as an arsonist with law enforcement wherever he lives after that.

Davis was charged as an adult and could still face time in an adult prison if the Department of Juvenile Justice won't accept him, District Attorney Mike Knowles said.

Segerstrom withheld ordering restitution pay for now since the cost of repairing the damage is not fully known. The school's Building F has been demolished and won't be fully rebuilt until next year.

Davis pleaded guilty on May 27 to starting the Nov. 23 fire.
