Weather may ease by weekend

Austen Thibault, The Union Democrat

Unseasonably hot temperatures broke Sonora records on Monday, but the Father's Day forecast is expected to be about 10 degrees cooler.

A new high temperature record of 101 was set for June 9, according to The Union Democrat records. The previous record was 100, set in 1973. The Union Democrat has kept weather records since 1906.

The National Weather Service predicts today will still be similarly hot, but temperatures will be on their way down through the work week.

In Sonora, today's high is forecast at 97 and Wednesday's at 92. Temperatures are expected to drop through Friday, ending in the mid-to-high 80s.

Weekend temperatures will tick back up slightly, with Saturday's high at 87 and Sunday and Monday's both at 89.

The forecast for Angels Camp follows the same pattern, but at about 3 degrees higher.

At Pinecrest, today holds a chance of thunderstorms. Clear skies are predicted for the rest of the week, with highs mostly in the upper 70s.

Lows in the upper Sierra will remain in the low 40s. Lows in Sonora, Angels Camp and Groveland will remain in the low 50s.

Groveland's highs are forecast to dip into the upper 70s this week, then settle into the very low 80s over the weekend.

A "Red Flag Warning" for fire danger was issued over the weekend for low humidity, high temperatures and high winds. No such warning has been given this week.
