Calaveras County staff cuts on table

By Mike Morris / The Union Democrat

PUBLIC MEETING: Calaveras County Board of Supervisors, 9 a.m. Tuesday, Board Chambers, 891 Mountain Ranch Road, San Andreas.

The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors will start budget hearings Tuesday afternoon in an effort to pass a 2014-15 spending plan by early next week.

The county's general fund - which pays for operating expenses like Sheriff's Office and administrative salaries - will be the focus of a majority of the budget discussions, and maybe some of the toughest cuts.

The recommended budget contains a $2.3 million reduction in the general fund contribution to various county departments. General fund staffing reductions include nearly 20 vacant positions and about five filled jobs. Vacant positions include eight sheriff's deputies, while filled positions include an account technician in the auditor-controller's office and an animal control officer.

Staffing and funding reductions will impact the level of services provided to the public, such as delayed administrative response times, said County Administrative Officer Lori Norton.

"It's just a necessary step we have to take," she said.
