Don Pedro area fires all contained

A new fire sparked Thursday by a car crash near Don Pedro Reservoir has been fully contained this morning.

A set of fires that started Wednesday in the same area - referred to collectively as the 59 Fire - were fully contained as of Thursday night after burning 487 acres.

The new fire was called the Hetch Hetchy Fire, but only because the area is underneath power lines that run to Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, according to Cal Fire. It was off of J-59, south of Old Don Pedro Road and near the northwest shore of Don Pedro Reservoir.

The Hetch Hetchy Fire began about 1 p.m. after a 65-year-old Sonora woman lost control of her car while driving on J-59.

Sheila Monaghan was driving a 2001 Lexus north on 59 when she failed to make a turn in the road, according to the California Highway Patrol. She went off the road, hit a boulder, flipped over and skidded down the road - at some point setting a spark into the nearby grass.

Monaghan was taken to Sonora Regional Medical Center for moderate injuries.

The Hetch Hetchy Fire was 100 percent contained as of 9:30 a.m. and burned 269 acres. It was previously thought to have burned 287 acres.
