Schools wind down for summer

Austen Thibault, The Union Democrat /

Elementary schools are giving their students a few final hurrahs before leaving for the summer.

Several elementary school graduation, or "promotion," ceremonies were held this week, and most districts' employees won't return to work next week.

It was also a last week for fun times classes could share together.

Soulsbyville Elementary School held its annual "Falcon Day" on Wednesday, an end-of-year tradition named after the school mascot where students get to play games instead of attending class for part of the day.

The event is usually water-based, and the school did maintain some aspects of that, while dropping others due to the drought.

Most of the schoolchildren on Wednesday carried buckets of water in a relay, balancing a need for speed and a need to limit the amount of water spilling over the sides.

They also squirted each other with spray bottles of water, but on a field yellowed from not being watered.

The school has its own well, explained Principal Bart Taylor.
