Gary Kuntz leads Pat Garrahan in Cal sheriff’s race

By Mike Morris / The Union Democrat

Calaveras County Sheriff Gary Kuntz was handily beating challenger Pat Garrahan in Tuesday's primary election, garnering more than half of the votes tallied Tuesday.

According to unofficial results released by the county Elections Office Tuesday night, Kuntz had collected 5,601 votes, or 56 percent, compared to Garrahan's 4,353 votes, or 43 percent.

Kuntz will win the race outright if he maintains a 50-plus percent lead over Garrahan, but roughly 2,100 ballots remained uncounted late Tuesday night.

Those uncounted ballots - a combination of provisional ballots and absentee ballots dropped at polling places - are expected to be counted later today.

"I believe all the hard work we've put in the last four years - building a new jail and putting deputies back on the street - havepaid off," a confident Kuntz said. "People have faith in me and I'm very proud of that."
