Election Day is Tuesday

Chris Caskey, The Union Democrat /

Tuesday is election day, so here are a few things you may need to know:

Polls in both counties will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. There are 24 places in Tuolumne County to cast ballots, and 15 in Calaveras.

Tuolumne polling places are listed on the Internet at www.tuolumnecounty.ca.gov. You also can call the Elections Office at 533-5570 for information.

Calaveras polling places can be found online at www.clerk.calaverasgov.us or by calling 754-6376.

While mail-in ballots were sent out in early May, the elections office will only accept them if they are received by 8 p.m. Tuesday. That means absentee ballots post-dated before that time but not received by the deadline will not be counted.

Voters who have not yet returned their mail-in ballots can drop them off at the elections offices today or at polling sites Tuesday.

More than half of the voters in both counties vote by mail.

Several local, state and federal could be decided in both counties.

Among the ballot items: A congressional seat and a state senate seat, both representing Calaveras and Tuolumne counties, a bevy of state offices, and several local elections.

In Calaveras County, those include two judgeships, sheriff, two Board of Supervisors seats. In Tuolumne County, local contested races include two Sonora City Council seats, a position on the Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors, and county Assessor-Recorder.
