Weekend Memorial Day remembrances planned

Chris Caskey, The Union Democrat

Memorial Day signals the beginning of summer revelry to many.

But veterans groups and local leaders in Tuolumne and Calaveras counties will work over the next few days to keep reverence in the weekend.

Several ceremonies, drives, memorial services and other events commemorate fallen veterans beginning today in the Mother Lode.

The events are a late spring tradition, with some dating back decades. Organizers work to make sure they are more about reflection than celebration.

"It's quite solemn," said Frank Matranga, of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 3154 in Sonora. "These are the people that gave their lives to the country."

Memorial Day is observed as a national holiday on the final Monday of May, established in 1971 through the National Holiday Act.
