Downtown Sonora roadwork commences

Noisy nights and traffic delays can be expected in downtown Sonora through the end of next week as Caltrans crews finish road work on Washington Street.

The grinding and repaving work is one of the final stages of a storm-drain improvement project started in the fall. The work, started Sunday, stretches from Stockton Road to Elkin Street.

Workers will be on the job from 9 p.m. through 6 a.m. through May 30, with one-way traffic controls and 15-minute delays expected during those hours. Parking restrictions are also in place during the work hours.

"We're trying to have the least amount of impact for the businesses in the area," said Caltrans spokeswoman Angela DaPrato.

DaPrato said studies showed doing the work during normal business hours would cause major traffic disruptions.
