Twain Harte school merger eyed

PUBLIC MEETING: The Twain Harte-Long Barn Union School District Board of Trustees, 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, district board room, 18995 Twain Harte Drive.

The Twain Harte-Long Barn Union School District Board of Trustees is scheduled to vote Wednesday on a proposal to merge Black Oak Elementary School and Twain Harte Middle School.

The Black Oak Campus was closed in 2007 because of declining enrollment.

The campus was built in the late 1990s, about a mile up the road from the district's main campus, to meet a "booming" enrollment of more than 800 students, said Principal Dan Mayers.

The district's 290 students now once again all attend the main Twain Harte Middle School campus, but are still enrolled as "Black Oak Elementary" students until reaching middle school. Retaining the Black Oak name was a concession to parents, students and staff who built the elementary school community and didn't want to lose that identity, said Superintendent Jeff Winfield.

The district is now ready to merge the schools following meetings with parents and staff that started in October, he said. The school will then simply be Twain Harte School.

Earlier this spring, the district put the Black Oak campus up for sale - soliciting bids from other schools and public agencies. The asking price is $950,000. There have been no takers, however.
