Thirteen girls will compete for the title of Miss Calaveras, and the winner will be crowned on the first night of the four-day Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee.

The Miss Calaveras Scholarship Pageant will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday on the main stage of the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Angels Camp.

"We haven't had this many contestants in a long time," said Sabrina Julian, president-elect of the Angels-Murphys Rotary Club, which has sponsored the contest for more than 30 years.

Contestants will be interviewed Thursday afternoon by out-of-county judges. During the pageant that evening, the girls will be judged in three categories: talent, health and fitness, and evening gown and personal statement.

Miss Calaveras will receive a $1,000 award. A $600 prize will go to first-princess, while second-princess will get $400. Other categories include a $500 prize for Miss Community Service.
