Thousands flock to Sonora for annual parade, rodeo

With sunny skies and mild temperatures, the 2014 Mother Lode Roundup drew a nice crowd over the weekend.

The two-day collection of festivities included the iconic Saturday parade, two-day rodeo and Mother's Day Breakfast.

Officials with the city of Sonora said all three went off without a hitch, thanks in large part to the cooperative spring weather that kept the clouds at bay and thermometer below 90 degrees.

According to the Sonora Police Department, crowds didn't appear to exceed those of recent years for Saturday's parade, and Police Chief Mark Stinson said that parking spaces were still available at 9 a.m.

Big winners among the 57th annual parade's almost 170 entries included Tuolumne County Cup winner Cal Fire Local 2881 Pipes and Drums Band,Roundup Sweepstakes winner Calaveras/Tuolumne Cattlewomen and Special Crowd Pleaser Lil' Cowboy Court.

Dispatch logs show the Sonora Police Department dealt with a slew of parking violations Saturday related to the parade, but incidents were minimal with two public intoxication arrests and two fights reported downtown on parade day.

"Things in general, it was about an average roundup rodeo and parade," Stinson said this morning.
