Schools bid farewell to longtime employees

Austen Thibault, The Union Democrat

About three dozen school employees in Tuolumne and Calaveras counties have announced their retirements this year.

Of the staffers - ranging from custodians, to teachers, to administrators - many saying goodbye have 10 or more years of service at the same school, and many have significantly more years under their belts.

While the number of retirements is fairly typical, according to several district superintendents, it does further mark the exodus of "baby boomers" from the work force.

Some economists say baby boomer retirements are leaving gaps in qualified employees, with younger generations being smaller and generally less inclined to stick with employers for long periods.

However, Tuolumne County Superintendent of Schools Joe Silva - who is retiring himself this year - doesn't see an issue with high rates of retirement. They occur every year, he said, and the county has not had a problem filling positions with qualified candidates.

"A lot of teachers want to work in our county," he said.
