Brewer hopes to tap wine country crowd

By Mike Morris / The Union Democrat

In a town full of wine-tasting rooms, Murphys is getting its first beer-tasting "tap room."

Mariposa-based Prospectors Brewing Co. plans to open its new tap room Saturday at 415 Main St. They will have eight different beers, including a new hefeweizen called "Murphy Brothers," named after brothers John and Daniel Murphy who settled the town in 1848.

"There's lots of wine in Murphys, but no brewery," said Terry Evans, managing partner of the craft brewery. "We talked with lots of locals, and they were supportive of us opening."

Michelle Plotnik, vice president of the Murphys Business Association, said Prospectors will provide an alternative to the wine-tasting rooms that line Main Street.

"I definitely think variety is good," she said.

Prospectors makes its beer at a brewery next to the Mariposa County Fairgrounds. Its first tap room opened in 2012, off Highway 49 in downtown Mariposa.
