Moccasin post office closes

By Mike Morris / The Union Democrat

The post office in Moccasin has closed, forcing about 90 postal customers to get their mail in Chinese Camp.

The post office was open two hours a day, five days a week, said Tyrone Jue, spokesman for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission.

"We had sent correspondence to the Postal Service to see if there was interest in renewing the lease," he said. "After months of no response, we began moving forward with plans to repurpose the building."

More than 200 SFPUC employees work at Moccasin as part of the Hetch Hetchy Water and Power system, and up to 100 people live at the company town, Jue said.

The building and land that housed the post office are owned by the City of San Francisco. The lease ended April 1 and the post office closed April 25.

"We lost our lease so we had to move," said Groveland Postmaster Norma Powell.
