State: Railtown ‘historical’ landmark

By Mike Morris / The Union Democrat

Railtown 1897 State Historic Park is now an official California Historical Landmark.

The park's nomination was recently approved by the State Historical Resources Commission at its meeting in Pacific Grove. Those who spoke in favor of the designation included Sharon Marovich, an advocate for historical preservation, and Railtown Superintendent Kim Baker.

"We are a lot more than a train ride," Baker said. "I think having this landmark designation raises our profile of historical significance. It's way past due."

The park is also applying for a National Historic Landmark designation, which is expected to be submitted to the federal government by early next year.

"It's an extremely technical and precise process," Baker said of the federal designation.
