CCWD opposes Moke River plan

By Mike Morris / The Union Democrat

The Calaveras County Water District's Board of Directors voted Wednesday to oppose state legislation proposed earlier this month that would designate the Mokelumne River a California Wild and Scenic River.

The action was in contrast to a vote taken by the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors in February unanimously supporting the designation.

CCWD directors were upset about not being consulted sooner.

"I'm concerned we didn't have this conversation three months ago," Director Don Stump said. "It almost feels like it was an intentional move going to the supervisors before us."

Supervisors passed a resolution requesting the county's representatives in the state Legislature introduce the measure. However, it was Sen. Loni Hancock, D-Oakland, who introduced Senate Bill 1199, which calls for protecting 37 miles of the river between Salt Springs Dam and Pardee Reservoir.

The Mokelumne River provides a majority of the water used by Hancock's East Bay constituents. Wild and scenic status would prevent any new dams on that stretch of river.
