Sonora road projects set to begin in May

Drivers in Sonora will notice work on two of the city's busiest roads next month as both the Mono Way widening project and paving work on Washington Street begin.

Sonora City Engineer Gerard Fuccillo said he expects work on the long-awaited Mono Way widening to commence in May. Estimates have Caltrans beginning surface work on Washington Street around May 18, Fuccillo said.

Caltrans confirmed work on Washington Street is scheduled for next month, though the start date depends on weather.

The city awarded the $3.7 million contract for the Mono Way job in early April to George Reed Inc.

"I do not have an exact schedule yet," Fuccillo said. "I believe the contractors will start mobilizing in early May, I think just after the (Mother Lode) Roundup."

Fuccillo said one of the first pieces of the job will be increasing the size of a drainage culvert that runs under the road. Located near the Roselyn Lane intersection, the culvert work will require some road closures and detours because crews will have to dig an open trench across the busy Mono Way.
