Sonora city land plan meeting set

Chris Caskey, The Union Democrat /

The city of Sonora wants to hear from its residents on housing needs as it updates its long-range land-planning guidelines.

The city will hold a public hearing at the May 20 Planning Commission meeting on the "housing element" part of the General Plan. Sonora planners have been working on possible changes to the housing element since January, when the city held an open house to collect feedback on housing needs within the city limits.

The housing update does not involve any changes to other land-use policies like zoning, according to Community Development Director Rachelle Kellogg.

The housing element will require City Council approval.

The city's General Plan is like a constitution for city building and development policies. It maps out future growth areas, how people can use their land, and how the city will meet state and federal goals, like housing affordability and open-space preservation.

It eventually sets zoning and building policies.
