TUD still weighing landlord water bills

By Alex MacLean / The Union Democrat

PUBLIC MEETING: Tuolumne Utilities District Board of Directors, 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, TUD boardroom, 18885 Nugget Blvd., Sonora.

The Tuolumne Utilities District board will hear from landlords on Tuesday who are angry about a recent decision to begin requiring a fee for mailing all future bills and notices directly to tenants.

District customers and landlords Bob and Laurel Leslie protested the change before the board voted 4-1 to approve it on Feb. 25. They recently submitted a request to address the board further on the matter at Tuesday's meeting.

The Leslies, with about a dozen other landlords, attended the board's April 8 meeting and urged the board to consider their request. The angry crowd heckled other customers who spoke in support of TUD's policy change.

The previous billing procedure allowed tenants to open individual accounts with the district and receive bills directly in their name. The bills and notices would be printed and sent directly to the tenants each billing cycle, courtesy of TUD and the rest of its ratepayers.

Prior to the policy change, roughly 2,500 tenants had an active account with the district.
