Rim Fire forest areas reopen

Three Stanislaus National Forest day-use areas and several campgrounds damaged in last year's Rim Fire have reopened, the U.S. Forest Service said Tuesday.

The Carlon, Middle Fork and Rainbow Pool day use areas, in addition to the Dimond O, Lost Claim, Lumsden, Lumsden Bridge and Sweetwater Campgrounds, are open.

Overnight camping at the campgrounds will be allowed beginning April 25, to coincide with the start of stream fishing season three days later.

The day-use areas and campgrounds have remained closed since last year's 402-square-mile Rim Fire, the largest ever recorded in the Sierra Nevada. More than 154,000 acres of the total 257,000 that burned occurred in the Stanislaus National Forest, mostly in the Groveland Ranger District.

A hunter's illegal fire in a remote canyon of the Clavey River started the massive blaze on Aug. 17, according to the Forest Service. Roads, day use areas, campgrounds and facilities within the fire's burn perimeter have been closed to the public since that time, because of concerns over publicsafety from hazardous trees.
