Incumbents and challengers for the 4th Congressional District and 8th State Senate District jumped into election season during a candidate night Monday at the Historic Opera Hall in Sonora.

Hosted by the Tuolumne County Farm Bureau, the forum included short introductions by candidates and some questions from attendees. Candidates vying for local spots in Tuolumne County government also participated.

In the Congressional race, Rep. Tom McClintock touted his experience while his challengers called for a change in Washington D.C.

McClintock took aim at policies within the U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service, saying he will fight attempts by the Forest Service to use the recent Rim Fire as an excuse to tighten restrictions on activities in the forest like cattle grazing. He also called for increased timber harvesting and continued to stand against removing tourism amenities in Yosemite National Park.

"Millions of board feet (of wood) are rotting on public lands right now," McClintock said, "which means millions of dollars are being lost."

The congressman from Granite Bay is being challenged by Art Moore and Jeffrey Gerlach in the June primary. Both opponents called for new blood in Congress.
