‘Coach’ bid farewell

Austen Thibault, The Union Democrat /

A longtime Sonora Elementary School coach and educator is retiring at the end of the year, and her students presented a personalized retirement gift Monday.

Karen Sinclair - known to students, alumni and staff as just "Coach" - is throwing in the towel after 31 years at the district.

Sinclair used to practically be the physical education department, hired on to teach P.E. to third through eighth grade.

She was later able to focus on just the sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders, but picked up an additional contract to handle student discipline.

Through that time, she's coached slow- and fast-pitch softball, track, wrestling and both boys and girls volleyball and basketball.

"I've always said it: I got paid to do something I love," Sinclair said after a reception held for her on Monday.

At the reception, seventh-graders revealed to her their retirement gifts.
