Calaveras medicinal pot shop gets permit

By Mike Morris, The Union Democrat

The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors approved Tuesday both a rezone and a permit for a medical marijuana dispensary in Arnold.

Little Trees Wellness Collective requested supervisors rezone its property - from general commercial to professional office - to comply with county code, and issue an administrative use permit for the dispensary to continue to operate.

"We're very happy Calaveras County remains compassionate to the people who need this," said Jeremy Carlson, president of Calaveras Naturals, the corporation that manages Little Trees Wellness Collective.

The collective has nearly 900 members, a majority of whom are Calaveras County residents, Carlson said after the meeting.

"We have a large group come up from Tuolumne County," he added.

Following a presentationby Carlson, 18 people spoke during an hour-long public hearing.

Several speakers gave personal anecdotes both for and against the dispensary.

Proponents said they need the convenience of a safe, local dispensary to get their medicine, while opponents said they don't want a dispensary in their community and questioned why the dispensary has been operating since last year without the proper zoning and permit.
