TUD’s main canal springs leak; repairs underway

By Alex MacLean, The Union Democrat

Pacific Gas and Electric Co. construction crews worked over the weekend on a leak in the main water canal that supplies water to Tuolumne Utilities District, the county's largest water purveyor.

The problem was discovered Wednesday, according to PG&E spokeswoman Brandi Ehlers. Crews had to shut off flows in the canal while investigating the "small leak."

Ehlers said the leak is in a remote area between Lyons Dam and Tuolumne, but she wasn't able to confirm the exact location.

The canal will remain off for workers to make repairs, which the utility hopes to have completed by sometime this week. A bypass pipe was constructed to continue moving some water to the district, Ehlers said.

People drawing water directly from the ditch may be affected due to the lack of water while the canal is being repaired, according to TUD spokeswoman Lisa Westbrook.

Service to all other TUD customers shouldn't be interrupted during the brief canal shutdown thanks to recent rainfall and lessened demand during winter that has left the district's treated-water storage tanks in good supply, Westbrook said.
