Sonora El arson suspect charged

A Sonora teen accused of starting November's Sonora Elementary School fire, which destroyed one building and damaged several other classrooms, will stand trial as an adult, the Tuolumne County District Attorney's Office said Friday.

Shahaun Lemont Davis, 17, a former Sonora Elementary student, is charged with burglary and arson of a structure, with a special enhancement for damage in excess of $1 million.

Judge Donald Segerstrom determined Friday that he was unfit for the juvenile system, as argued by the DA's Office.

District Attorney Mike Knowles said Davis is the only person charged at this time and he was determined by authorities to be responsible.

Davis and another former student, however, were both seen discussing the fire with police at Sonora Elementary School in the days following the fire.

The fire started the evening of Nov. 23. "Fuel materials" were put into a garbage can and set afire, and the can was then pushed against a building, Knowles alleges.
