Alleged Sonora Elementary arsonist ID'd

Austen Thibault, The Union Democrat

The 17-year-old former student arrested under suspicion of starting the Sonora Elementary School fire that destroyed a building and damaged 15 classrooms has been charged as an adult.

Shahaun Lemont Davis, of Sonora, was charged on Friday with burglary and arson of a structure with a special enhancement for damage in excess of $1 million by the Tuolumne County District Attorney's Office.

Davis was charged after being determined to be unfit for the juvenile system by Judge Donald Segerstrom on Friday. The DA's Office had recommended he be charged as an adult and his juvenile hearings continued for several months before the decision was made on Friday.

Davis will be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Department 2 of the Tuolumne County Superior Court.

He remains in custody in an out-of-county juvenile facility until further order of the court.
