Distracted drivers beware

The California Highway Patrol along with other local law enforcement are cracking down this month on distracted drivers as part of National Distracted Driver Month.

Officer Nick Norton, of the Jamestown CHP office, said Tuolumne County officers as of Wednesday had already ticketed 11 drivers in the crack-down's first two days.

"I am going to go get ready to ticket people right now, especially because of this month's operation, I will be working out in the force more" Norton said Thursday morning.

Norton said that a man was cited Wednesday when he ran a red light because he was looking away from the roadway while driving.

"Officers will be looking for any distracted driving, not just cell phone use, so be aware" Norton said.

The nationwide crackdown is intended to heighten driver awareness and also to compile data regarding distracted driving.

Nationally, distracted driving - texting, talking on the cell phone - resulted in 421,000 injures and 3,228 deaths last year.

Remaining peak enforcement days are April 8, 17, and 22.
