Filings added in Walmart lawsuit

Chris Caskey, The Union Democrat

An ongoing lawsuit over the expansion of Walmart in Sonora has caught the attention of some legal and policy groups outside of the area.

The California Supreme Court agreed last year to review the case involving Walmart, the City of Sonora and an opposition citizens group but has not yet set a date for arguments.

Several outside organizations however, have filed paperwork with the court, believing the case's outcome could have statewide implications.

Three organizations so far - Citizens in Charge, the Pacific Legal Foundation and League of California Cities - have filed amicus curiae briefs in the case since the state's highest court agreed to review it.

Known as "friend of the court" proceedings, the legal paperwork serves as an outside opinion submitted by parties or organizations advocating for one side or the other.

All three "friends" in this case are asking the court touphold an original Tuolumne County Superior Court decision allowing the project to move forward without a more extensive environmental impact report.
