Soldier statue on way to Murphys

A seven-foot-tall bronze statue of a soldier is en route from Missouri to Murphys.

The sculpture, commissioned by the Kautz family, will be the latest addition to a veterans memorial adjacent to Murphys Community Park.

The statue will face an existing flagpole display and brick wall featuring the names of veterans.

During their meeting Tuesday, the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors approved installing the statue on county-owned land along with a new brick wall, park benches and tables.

Stephen Kautz, president of Ironstone Vineyards in Murphys, said his family met artist John Kobald in Colorado and commissioned him to create the statue.

The bronze sculpture is being transported from St. Louis, where the casting was done. It will officially be unveiled on Memorial Day, May 26.
