Statue of soldier requested for park

PUBLIC MEETING: Calaveras County Board of Supervisors, 9 a.m. Tuesday, 891 Mountain Ranch Road, San Andreas.

The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors will vote Tuesday on whether to expand a veterans memorial adjacent to Murphys Community Park.

The Ebbetts Pass Veterans Memorial District has asked that a statue of a soldier be installed on the county-owned land. Other proposed improvements include installing a new wall to showcase the names of veterans along with park benches and tables.

"More people would like to have their names or the names of family members on the wall," said Supervisor Merita Callaway, whose father and sister are listed on an existing wall at the memorial along Algiers Street.

All of the labor and materials associated with the improvements will be provided by the veterans district, county staff said.

The improvements are proposed to be constructed in an area near designated wetlands. A professional wetlands scientist has surveyed the area and made sure the wetlands will not be impacted, County Administrative Officer Lori Norton said.
