Plan calls for 260 acres of clearcut

By Alex MacLean / The Union Democrat

Property owners and conservation groups are concerned about a plan by Sierra Pacific Industries that calls for clearcutting 260 acres of tree stands northeast of Arnold.

"I'm not against SPI or what they do," said Tristan Bowen, who owns a second home on the 8000 block of Summit Level Road in Camp Connell, which is adjacent to the proposed harvest area. "I'm just kind of asking them to be a good neighbor and not do anything too extreme."

The "Swiss Ranch Timber Harvest Plan" spans roughly three miles and a total of 361 acres of SPI-owned land northeast of Arnold, near the South Fork of the Mokelumne River.

The logging company owns nearly 2 million acres of forest land in California and about 230,000 in Oregon.

Clearcutting would remove all usable timber from each tree stand in the proposed harvest area. The company would replant about 300 trees per acre, including Douglas fir, giant sequoia, incense cedar, ponderosa pine, sugar pine and white fir, according to the 286-page plan.

All foresters familiar with the plan were working out of the office Thursday and not available to comment for this story, according to SPI spokesman Mark Pawlicki.
