Columbia hotels to reopen

Union Democrat staff /

The California Department of Parks and Recreation next month plans to reopen and operate a pair of historic hotels in Columbia closed since early January.

The City and Fallon hotels - which date to the 1850s and have a combined 28 rooms - were shuttered when the previous concessionaire, Briggs Hospitality, abruptly gave notice it wasn't going to renew its month-to-month lease.

Briggs Hospitality, which took over the hotel operations in 2010, also gave up three rental cabins in the park. The City Hotel Restaurant and What Cheer Saloon are also closed and the Parks Department is seeking concessionaires to run those.

Sierra Repertory Theater's Fallon House Theater operation wasn't affected by the changes because SRT has a separate lease.

Briggs Hospitality officers Jeff and Jackie Briggs, formerly of Sonora and Aptos, couldn't be reached for comment.
